TPS Responds to UIL Amended Policy for Pre-participation Physical Evaluations for the 2020-2021 School Year

Thanks to the diligence of members, TPS staff was notified about a policy change from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) that will only require student athletes to obtain a pre-participation physical examination (PPE) for 2020-2021 school year if they had not had one previously or if they answered “yes” to any of the first 6 questions on the medical history form. While we understand the UIL’s intent to limit barriers to participation in athletics during the COVID-19 pandemic, TPS sent a letter to UIL emphasizing the essential nature of the adolescent well-child exam coupled with the PPE even during a pandemic. The letter goes on to ask for additional collaboration between the UIL and TPS leadership so that we can jointly message to families about the importance of seeking preventive healthcare prior to participation in athletics.
