RSV Summer Season Changes Begin Sept. 1

Beginning September 1, 2022, HHSC will close the 2022 Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Summer season for specific regions in Texas. HHSC based these changes on RSV testing data reviewed for the 11 public health service regions and recommendations from the Texas Pediatric Society's RSV Task Force.

The summer RSV season for Texas regions 1, 2, 4, 9, and 10 will close effective Sept. 1, and the following regions 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11 will remain open. Refer to the RSV season schedule for information regarding start and end dates for all regions.

The summer season began June 1, 2022, and HHSC policy regarding approval of up to five monthly shots per season will remain in effect for those still open regions. HHSC will continue to monitor RSV testing data and coordinate with the Texas Pediatric Society's RSV Task Force for future regional changes. It is unknown when the Fall/Winter traditional season will start for specific regions based on the unusual pattern of RSV activity observed this year.

HHSC will communicate additional regional changes as this information becomes available.

MCOs must adopt the same criteria VDP uses for fee-for-service Medicaid. Providers may also refer to the MCO Resources for links to each MCO for specific guidance.
