Oral Evaluation and Fluoride Varnish Certification

Texas Medicaid has implemented a new fluoride varnish program that allows primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to receive reimbursement for providing a limited oral health evaluation and application of fluoride varnish for children ages 6 months to 35 months. Eligible providers certified to perform this service as part of a Texas Health Steps visit will be paid $34.16 in addition to the THSteps checkup payment.

To receive reimbursement for providing this service, primary care physicians and mid-level practitioners must be certified by the state by either attending an in-person training or participating in a live webinar. The Oral Health Program at DSHS will be offering two webinars per month beginning in May.  The webinars will be on Tuesdays with alternating times of 12:00pm to 1:30pm and 5:30pm to 7:00pm. The 1½ hour training sessions are free of charge and 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 credit will be offered upon completion. Dates and registration information for these trainings can be found on the Oral Health Program website at http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/dental/OEFV_Training.shtm. This site will be updated regularly with new dates for training opportunities.
