AAP Critical Updates on COVID-19

For the week ending September 16, about 225,978 child COVID-19 cases were reported in the U.S., with children representing 25.7% of the weekly reported cases. Since the beginning of the pandemic, children represented 15.7% of total cumulated cases. Read more here. As of September 22, 13 million US children under age 18 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, representing 55% of 12-17 year-olds. This includes 10.4 million children who are fully vaccinated, approximately 45% of 12-17 year-olds. Read more here.

Vaccine Information

COVID-19 vaccines are widely available in the United States. Everyone aged 12 years and older should get a COVID-19 vaccination. With the expansion of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine’s Emergency Use Authorization to include adolescents ages 12 years and older, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Immunization Unit is encouraging all pediatric providers to enroll in the COVID-19 Vaccine Program. All interested pediatric providers should enroll now at EnrollTexasIZ.dshs.texas.gov. Read more about COVID-19 Pediatric Provider Enrollment here.

As of July 27, 2021, the CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Children should return to full-time in-person learning in the fall with layered prevention strategies in place.
