Early Childhood Intervention
Early Childhood Intervention, ECI, is a statewide program for families with children, birth to three, with disabilities and developmental delays. ECI supports families to help their children reach their potential through developmental services. Services are provided by a variety of local agencies and organizations across Texas.
For Physicians
By federal mandate, physicians must refer children under 3 years of age to an ECI contracted program as soon as possible, but no more than 7 days after the child has been identified as having a developmental delay or disability.
ECI Referral Form
This form, developed jointly by ECI and representatives of TPS, can be used to refer patients (0-36 months) to ECI. It has been designed to simplify the referral process and facilitate communication with ECI programs about children referred. This form allows you to request the information you want and obtain the written parental consent needed by ECI – which will streamline the process for information exchange. You are not required to use this form, however, it will be recognized and accepted by ECI and may be a valuable resource for providers.
PLEASE NOTE: There are 3 places where you need to get the parent or legal guardian’s written consent for the information you are requesting. ECI cannot send the information, even if you have checked the box, if you don’t include the needed signature.
ALSO NOTE: There is a place for you to give the results for any screening you may have already done. If you have conducted any screenings, providing the results to ECI will help inform their evaluation process.
For Families
ECI provides services and support to Texas families and their children, birth to 36 months, with developmental delays or disabilities. ECI services are unique because:
- Parents and professionals work together as a team
- Services are convenient for families
- Children learn new skills through everyday activities
- Services are coordinated with others in the community
- Families of all income levels receive ECI services
